It's been said by many Production Stage Managers "that hiring a former dancer that has transitioned into stage management is one of the finest choices a production can make".
The reasons why? They work from a place of discipline, integrity, consistency and their musicality is an asset. They know how to take direction and know how to "lead" when necessary. The dancers training is built on repetition, sweat and strenuous physical work. You won't find more dedicated and focused individuals. They know what it means to hit a mark, be in the right position time after time and how to support their partners. They know what it means to be a "team player" working for the whole. People often under estimate the mind or intellect of a dancer. The dancer in some cases works from a visual approach. Show them what is needed and they'll give you what you're looking for again and again.
As I have been making this transition into stage management, I am reminded that all the work I have done as a dancer and all the creative teams I have work for, only enhance my abilities and qualifications to be an effective stage manager. What it means to show up, listen, observe and be aware of the needs of others. Serving the production, not yourself.
